About the Contest

Who is allowed to participate in the US Mobile Contest?

Any US mobile phone user who is at least 18 years of age and a legal resident of the United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

How can Red Bull use the images I submitted?

Red Bull may use your submitted images for editorial or promotional purposes in conjunction with Red Bull Illume.

Does the photograph need to be Red Bull branded?

The images do not have to be Red Bull branded. Any unbranded or Red Bull branded action and adventure shot can be submitted as long as trademarks, logos, etc. from 3rd parties are not shown. Please refer to the Official Rules below for details.

What is a Mobile Device?

Any portable computing device such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Action cameras are not considered as a mobile device in this competition.

How is the winning image being selected?

A panel of esteemed judges will select the top photo based on the technical superiority, composition, creativity, impact, artistic flair and overall qualities of photographic excellence.

What's the prize?

The overall winner will have their image displayed at all Red Bull Illume U.S. exhibit tour stops and receive an all-expenses paid trip to Chicago for the Red Bull Illume Winner Awards Ceremony on September 28th at the Art Institute of Chicago/Millennium Park. In addition, the winner will receive a G-Tech USB3 Hard drive with 1 TB storage.


What is an inappropriate submission?

Images of a political nature, pornographic images, full frontal nudity and sexually explicit images of any kind are not permitted. For details, please refer to the Official Rules below.

How many megapixels should my image have?

At least 8 megapixels. To determine the megapixels of your image, simply multiply the vertical and horizontal number of pixels and divide by one million, e.g. 12.2 mega pixels (2848 pixels x 4288 pixels = 12,212,224). You can also check your megapixel file size in Photoshop by opening the image and pressing Apple+Alt+I (Apple) or Ctrl+Alt+I (PC).

What is the difference between file size and picture size?

The image size of a graphic file is given in pixels (see above example calculating megapixels). File size measures the weight of a computer file.

I used a 8 megapixels or higher camera, but the resolution is still too small. Why?

  • If the resolution of your image is not sufficient, please check your camera settings: Even if you are using a 8+ megapixel camera you must also ensure that you are shooting at the highest possible resolution.
  • Also be aware that photo cropping in post-production may alter the size of your image and result in a final picture size of fewer than 8 megapixels.
  • Submitted images that fail to comply with the requested picture size will be disqualified.

My images aren't 8 megapixels. Can I submit them anyway? Can I increase the megapixels in Photoshop in order to meet the requirements?

Images with less than 8 megapixels will be disqualified. It is true that Photoshop allows you to add pixels to your images by using rendering intents. Unfortunately, this procedure does not raise image quality to the required level and is therefore unacceptable.

Why am I unable to upload my images?

If you can't upload your images please check the format and file size of your image.

  • You can only upload JPGs. JPG is a compression format that reduces file size. You cannot submit TIFFs, RAWs or similar.
  • Please make sure not to exceed the maximum file size of 10 Megabytes (MB). If you still can't submit, the file might be damaged. Try to open it on your computer and see if any errors occur.

I have already submitted five images, but would like to add another one. Can I exchange images?

Once a photograph has been submitted, it is final and may not be replaced by another photograph.

Can I submit images under more than one account?

Please note that is against the rules to submit images under more than one account and will lead to disqualification.

If one of my images gets disqualified, will I be able to submit a replacement?

No. You may submit five images per category and these cannot be replaced after submission. Please choose your images carefully and consider rules and requirements for submission.

Along with his team, Burkard is based out of his full-scale production studio and art gallery near his hometown in Central Coast California. 




Chris Davenport

Chris Davenport is a Professional Big Mountain Skier and Mountaineer. From the tops of mountains to the cliffs of Glaciers, Dav is always capturing images of his perspective of the world. In his spare time, he’s also a two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion.








Christian Pondella

Christian Pondella is an adventure sports photographer based in Mammoth Lakes, CA. He enjoys traveling throughout the world experiencing different cultures and photographing in remote mountain ranges. As a participant in a lot of the sports he photographs, his goal is to capture the viewer’s emotions and make them feel like they are part of the action. Christian’s images have appeared in advertising and promotional campaigns for Red Bull, San Disk, Patagonia, ESPN, Atomic, FSTOP Gear, Eddie Bauer, Oakley, Kastle Skis, Scarpa, and many other outdoor brands. He is a Senior Photographer for Powder Magazine, a San Disk Extreme Team member, Fstop Global Pro, and Lululemon elite Ambassador. Christian has also been published in Sports Illustrated, ESPN Magazine, Outside, Men’s Journal, Maxim, FHM, GQ, Climbing, Outdoor Photographer, Shutterbug, Rock and Ice and a variety of other publications and newspapers throughout the world.




Clark Fyans

Clark Fyans is an Action Sports Producer, Helicopter Ski Guide, as well as a Professional Photographer. Clark got his first taste of the mountains in pre-school where he was ripping around the Wasatch on sticks the size of shinbones. In 2001, Clark relocated to Alaska to pursue a career in the mountains where he worked on the Alyeska Snow Safety Team and also started guiding guests to the Seven Summits Circuit. Clark eventually landed a spot as the lead guide and helicopter operations manager where he continued to guide heli-skiing in Chile as well as the Canadian Rockies. By working with professional skiers, snowboarders and iconic companies, this eventually led to him signing on as the Lead Guide / Field Producer for Brainfarm Cinema’s / Red Bull Media House “The Art of Flight”. Clark is currently located in Marina Del Rey, CA, working as a Supervising Producer for Red Bull Media House Feature Films.

Morgan Maassen

Morgan Maassen is a photographer from Santa Barbara, California and was born in 1990. His interest in photography started in his teens after experimenting with his family's home video camera at the beach, goofing off with friends and exploring the central coast. Maassen graduated high school early at the age of sixteen to concentrate and explore visual media freely and intensely via many different mediums. After working in the graphic design industry, he then decided to pursue filmmaking and photography as both a creative outlet and occupation. Growing up in and around the ocean has provided Maassen with his favorite subject to photograph. He's also frequently incorporated his passions of traveling, nature, architecture and fashion into his work. While he strives to capture what he sees as beautiful, this is often not the perfect moment. Instead, light, textures, and the abstract nature of the earth are what truly fascinate Maassen. Maassen considers himself an active participant in the digital age and enjoys working with both film and digital mediums, and motion pictures are the apple of his eye. He dreams of nothing more than visiting the next new country, capturing whatever beauty it may hold.

Ryan Huggy Hughes is originally from the backwoods of Grass Valley, California.  He grew up snowboarding in Lake Tahoe, CA documenting his friends hucking with any kind of camera he could find. Now he is the Photo editor of Snowboarder Magazine. Zak Noyle

Zak Noyle is a world-renowned fine art photographer with a unique perspective on surf, sea and landscape. Born and raised on the Hawaiian Island of O’ahu, Zak spends countless hours in the water, creating dramatic imagery and artful interpretations of the world’s most magnificent ocean environment. Zak has been a senior staff photographer at Surfer Magazine since 2010 and has been published in countless international surf magazines. His images also regularly appear in Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, ESPN and in advertisements for major brands such as RVCA, Red Bull, Chanel and Lululemon. Official Rules


ELIGIBILITY: The Red Bull Illume US Mobile Contest (“Contest”) begins on July 13, 2016 at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Coast Time (“PT”) and ends on August 14, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. PT (“Promotion Period”). The time shall be determined by Sponsor’s timekeeping systems, and Sponsor may also rely on the time processing functions of third party applications. Sponsor shall have the sole discretion in determining the timeliness of any action or inaction related to this Contest. All times mentioned in these Official Rules shall be Central Time unless expressly noted otherwise. The Contest is open to legal residents of the United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, who are at least 18 years old and the age of majority in their jurisdictions of residence at the time of entry. Void where prohibited. Employees of Red Bull North America (“Sponsor”) and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising agencies, public relations agencies, prize suppliers, including any vendors providing services in connection with this Contest (collectively, the “Sponsor Affiliates”), and employees, agents, directors, officers (including members of their immediate family – i.e., spouse, mother, father, in-laws, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister, children and grandchildren – or those living in the same household) of Sponsor or any Sponsor Affiliates are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws. 

TO ENTER: To enter this Contest, complete the following steps during the Promotion Period:
Visit and register for the contest by filling out the registration form, setting up a login & user password for your submission page and accepting the Official Rules;

2. You will receive an email with an activation link. Click on the link to activate your account and log onto your submission page;

3. Upload your own image which adheres to the below requirements, on the submission page to enter the contest;

i. Image Requirements

a) Action and adventure images shot with a mobile device: Any portable computing device such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Action cameras are not considered as a mobile device in this competition.

b) Required image format: JPG.

c) Minimum picture size: 8 mega pixels

d) Maximum file size: 10 mega byte

e) All images submitted must have been taken after April 30, 2013. 

Your completion of the above steps 1-3(e) will earn you one entry into the contest. Limit five (5) entries per person during the Contest Period. You may only submit images which you took yourself.Entries that are not responsive to Sponsor’s request as described in these Official Rules may be disqualified in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected entries, or entries not received regardless of cause. In the event of a dispute over who submitted an entry, the entry will be deemed to have been directly submitted by the authorized account used to enter the Contest. The authorized account holder is deemed to be the natural person who is assigned to the account by the relevant entity responsible for assigning those accounts. By entering and/or participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules, Sponsor’s Privacy Policy as set forth in these Official Rules.In the planning, creation, and distribution of your entry or entries (including, without limitation, the Photo/Video(s)), you warrant and represent that you will abide by all laws, regulations, and ordinances and that you will not harm, attempt to harm, or threaten to harm any person (including yourself) or property. You further warrant and represent that you will take the highest level of care in planning, creating, and distributing your entries. 

Each Entry must meet all of the Required Representations and Warranties set forth below to the fullest extent applicable for that Entry. Failure to complete any step outlined in, or to follow any of, the Official Rules may result in your disqualification. 

REQUIRED REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES: By participating in this Contest, you represent and warrant that all of your entries (including, without limitation, the Photo/Video(s)) comply with the following criteria as applicable (collectively, the “Required Representations and Warranties”): 

(i) Your entry or entries must be your own original work or you must have all the rights necessary to post or re-post the content. Each entry must not contain any material that would violate or infringe upon the rights of any person or entity, including without limitation copyrights, trademarks or rights of privacy or publicity, or that is defamatory, threatening, indecent, obscene or offensive, or that is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to any applicable laws or regulations, or which requires a license from any third party. 

(ii) You must have the express written consent of any identifiable persons appearing or referenced in your entry or entries to their Persona (as defined below) being used in the ways set out in these Official Rules, including Sponsor’s right to use your entry or entries for any future commercial purpose without restrictions. Upon request, you will obtain written consent of any such persons for Sponsor in the form identified by Sponsor. If any person appearing in any entry is under the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence, the written consent and signature of a parent or legal guardian is required.

(iii) Except for the marks of the Sponsor (addressed below), the entry and image must not feature any names, products or services of any company or entity or any third party trademarks, logos, trade dress or promotion of any brand, product, or service. Sponsor grants you the limited permission to display their marks and products in your entry and image solely for purposes of entering this Contest and subject to these Official Rules.

(iv) Each entry must be appropriate for public viewing. Without limiting the foregoing, each entry must not be lewd, obscene, sexually explicit, pornographic, disparaging, defamatory, libelous, violate any laws or otherwise contain content which Sponsor in their sole discretion decides is inappropriate or objectionable. Your entry or entries must also not disparage or cast a negative light on any person, entity, or brand, product, or service.

(v) Each entry must comply with all as applicable, requirements and terms regarding the use of the entry website’s services. 

Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to not consider any entry for the Contest if it believes the entry violates or potentially violates any of the foregoing requirements or otherwise fails to comply with any provision of these Official Rules. You agree to reimburse Sponsor, and Sponsor Affiliates in full in respect of any losses, damages, and expenses, including reasonable attorney fees that they may sustain from the breach of a representation or warranty made by you or the use of any rights granted by you to Sponsor hereunder. By entering, you warrant that your entry or entries comply with the requirements set out above including those at (i)–(v) above. By entering, you grant to Sponsor in the context of Red Bull Illume, the Red Bull Illume contests, the Red Bull Illume Tours or for Red Bull Illume promotions, marketing, advertising, events and exhibitions, a perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sub-licensable, freely assignable license to reproduce your entry and any Photo/Video(s) and to otherwise use, exploit, copy, modify, adapt, edit, publish and display the entry and/or Photo/Video(s) in any form, manner, venue, media or technology now known or later developed for any and all purposes, including, without limitation, for purposes of trade, advertising, and promotion as Sponsor and its licensees or assignees determine, without further compensation, notification, or permission. Further, by entering, you hereby waive any moral rights you may have in any entry or entries in favor of the Sponsor.  

By submitting any entry or entries, you also grant to Sponsor the worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, fully sub-licensable, and freely transferable right, but not the obligation, to use any and all names, identities, titles, likenesses, distinctive appearances, physical likenesses, images, portraits, pictures, photographs (whether still or moving), screen personas, voices, vocal styles, statements, gestures, mannerisms, personalities, performance characteristics, biographical data, signatures, and any other indicia or imitations of identity or likeness listed, provided, referenced, or otherwise contained in the entry and/or image (all attributes, collectively, per person, a “Persona”) for purposes of advertising and trade, in any format, medium, or technology now known or later developed without further notice, approval, or compensation, unless prohibited by law.

WINNER SELECTION: After the close of the Period, a judging panel consisting of qualified individuals selected by Sponsor (the “Judging Panel”) will review the eligible entries. The Judging Panel will judge the entries based on the following criteria, each as weighted by the Judging Panel in its sole discretion: (a) quality (b) creativity/originality, (c) artistic flair and (e) overall composition (“Judging Criteria”)

The Judging Panel will select one (1) potential Grand Prize winner displayed at a unique nighttime photo exhibition touring the US, based on the above Judging Criteria. To be clear, the Judging Panel may judge multiple entries that submit similar entries; in such a case, the Judging Panel may consider the timing of such entries in making its decision but will not be bound to designate as a potential winner the first submission of such similar entries. The selected winners are subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with these official rules.

GRAND PRIZE: The one (1) Grand Prize winner will, upon verification of eligibility and compliance with these official rules receive:

- Round trip airfare for Grand Prize winner and winner’s guest for two (2) nights and lodging to Chicago;
Admission to Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2016; 
- Invitation to the Red Bull Illume Awards Ceremony including food, beverage, and entertainment.
- A G-Tech USB3 Hard drive with 500 GB storage

The approximate retail value of the Grand Prize is $2,000.

All prizes are awarded “AS IS.” Neither Sponsor nor Sponsor Affiliates make or offer any warranty or guarantee, either express or implied (including, without limitation, quality, merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose) in connection with this Contest or any prize. No issuer of any offered prize is sponsoring this Contest. Event tickets are subject to the terms and conditions of their respective issuer. Prize details and availability are subject to change, in which case a prize of equal value may be substituted at Sponsor’s sole discretion. Prizes consist only of the items listed, are non-transferable, with no cash redemption or substitution except at Sponsor's sole discretion. Sponsor will determine all prize details (brand, model, size, color, etc.) in its sole discretion. Federal, state, or local taxes on prizes, if any, and any other costs, fees or expenses not listed above are the sole responsibility of each winner. 

NOTIFICATION: On or about September 7th, the (1) potential Grand Prize winner will be notified by Red Bull through telephone or email information submitted at entry. Sponsor may require the potential winner to verify that he or she is the owner of the relevant account. Potential winner must respond to the notification message and provide all requested information within 3 days of the first contact or attempted contact from Sponsor or the potential prize may be forfeited. To claim any prize, Sponsor may require winner to complete, sign, and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability Release/Publicity Release forms, and other applicable documents, which may require a social security number, before claiming and prize. All required documents must be completed and returned to Sponsor within five (5) days of the date and time listed on the documents. At Sponsor’s discretion, winner(s) may be required to produce picture or some other form of proper identification to claim any prize. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any prize with prize of equal or greater value. If a potential winner cannot be contacted, fails to timely claim the prize, is disqualified, fails to timely execute and return any required forms, or if the prize notification is returned as undeliverable, an alternate winner will be selected from among the remaining eligible entries by random draw or as solely determined by Sponsor. If by reason of printing or other error, more prizes are claimed than the number of prizes set forth in these Official Rules, a random drawing will be held to award the advertised number of prizes in the relevant category. Under no circumstances will more than the advertised number of prizes be awarded. 

PUBLICITY & MARKETING: Submission of an entry and/or Photo in the Contest constitutes permission to the Sponsor to use entrants’ name, identity, title, likeness, distinctive appearance, physical likeness, image, portrait, picture, photograph (whether still or moving), screen persona, voice, vocal style, statements, gesture, mannerism, personality, performance characteristic, biographical data, signature, and any other indicia or imitation of identity or likeness for purposes of advertising and trade, in any medium, without further notice, approval, or compensation, unless prohibited by law. Submission of contact information in connection with this Contest (whether or not required), including, without limitation, mailing address, phone number, email address, during entry constitutes permission for Sponsor to use entrant’s personal information for purposes of administration of the Contest. You also may opt-in to be added to Sponsor’s customer database and to permit Sponsor to contact you in the future for promotional and other reasons. You may opt-out of receiving such communications as set forth in Sponsor’s Privacy Policy (located at or as provided within any such marketing materials (e.g., using the “Unsubscribe” feature provided in the footer of Sponsor’s e-mails). NO LIABILITY & INDEMNIFICATION: By entering this Contest, you agree to release, discharge and hold harmless Sponsor, Sponsor Affiliates, and their respective directors, officers, employees, agents and assigns (the “Released Parties”) from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of, or relating to, your participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities (including, without limitation, the event) and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder (including, without limitation, any misrepresentation made by you in connection with the Contest; any non-compliance by you with these Official Rules; claims brought by persons or entities other than the parties to these Official Rules arising from or related to your involvement with the Contest; acceptance, possession, misuse or use of any prize or participation in any Contest-related activity or participation in this Contest; any malfunction, error or other problem arising in connection with the collection, processing, or retention of entry information; or any typographical or other error in the printing, offering or announcement of any prize or winner). The foregoing includes, without limitation, any claim for personal injury, property loss or damage, or death arising in any way in connection with the Contest.

OTHER TERMS: Decisions of Sponsor on all matters related to the Contest are final and binding. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or modify the Contest for any reason, including but not limited to, if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the Contest, or if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper administration of the Contest as determined by Sponsor, in its sole discretion. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify or prohibit the participation of an individual if fraud or tampering is suspected, or if the individual fails to comply with any requirement of participation or with any provision in these Official Rules. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE OR UNDERMINE THE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL & CIVIL LAWS. GOVERNING LAW & MANDATORY ARBITRATION: Any disputes arising under this Contest and/or these Official Rules will be governed by relevant U.S. federal statutes and regulations and the internal laws of the State of California. Sponsor and each entrant agree that any such claim or dispute between the parties, or between a party and any agent, employee, successor, or assign of the other, related to this Contest and/or these Official Rules (including the applicability of this arbitration clause) shall be resolved by binding arbitration administered by the JAMS under its rules and procedures in effect when the claim is filed. RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY: Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify or prohibit the participation of an individual if fraud or tampering is suspected; if the individual fails to comply with any requirement of participation or with any provision in these Official Rules; if the individual’s behavior or communication at any point is disruptive, may or does cause damage or to any person, property, or reputation of Sponsor, or is otherwise not in accordance with all applicable laws and generally accepted social practices as determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion.

SEVERABILITY: If any provision(s) of these Official Rules are held to be invalid or unenforceable, all remaining provisions hereof will remain in full force and effect.
