John Gibson
I started my career as a newspaper photographer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from 1987 to 1996. After traveling to the 1994 World Mountain Bike Championships in Vail, Colorado, to photograph the event during my holidays, I started to work towards becoming a full-time freelance cycling photographer. In the summer of 1996, I quit my newspaper job, started out on my own, and began to shoot the sport of mountain biking full time. I managed to get a few clients in the cycling industry, and everything snowballed from there.
I now travel extensively, shooting racing and freeride mountain biking for a list of commercial and editorial clients. When I’m not on the road, I try my best to ride every day on the local trails near my home in Canmore, Alberta. Even though it seems that the photography world has gone digital, I still enjoy shooting black-and-white film, then processing and printing it myself. Digital is fun as well, but I still enjoy the craft of shooting film even though now it has become “old school”!
