Category Winner 2007: new creativity
Jimmy Wilson
I’m 21 years old, and my hometown is St. Augustine, Florida. I took an interest in photography around age 15 and always loved surfing so I started photographing my friends while they were surfing. I was just doing it for fun. It was satisfying to me to get slides back from the lab or make prints in the darkroom. It wasn’t long before I decided that photography was what I wanted to do for a career. I was fortunate enough to have other photographers helping me improve, and I ended up traveling out to California for a few months, where I interned at Transworld SURF magazine. Now I work as the photo editor for Eastern Surf Magazine.
In my opinion, surfing is one of the most interesting sports to shoot because there are so many different ways of capturing it. Lately, the standards of surf photos have gone way up. People are progressing photography to go along with how the surfers are progressing surfing. That’s really good to see! I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me get to where I am today, especially Mez, Pete Taras, and Steve Sherman. Also, to anyone who has inspired me -thanks!
