Adobe Unveils Photoshop CS5

The hotly anticipated Photoshop CS5 is unveiled today, April 12 with a flurry of new tools that Adobe say will “deliver improvements in interactivity and performance.”

First released in 1990, Photoshop is the media and publishing industry’s standard software and can even claim to have entered common language as a verb.

Of the many new features, the "Content Aware Fill" tool is the most talked about update on photographry forums. Using the tool, any unwanted object in an image can be removed and the software will automatically 'fill in' the background seamlessly with matching colors and the patterns from the surrounding areas.

Adobe claim that photographers will be able to work ten times faster with high-resolution images in the deluxe version of the product, CS5 Photoshop Extended.

Better edge detection and masking promise to speed up the effort of making selections in complex images. The Lens Correction feature can also adjust distortion and vignetting for many common lens profiles.

The increasing popularity of HDR images has been recognized and Adobe have added a feature for those who want the HDR look without the need of knowing the technique. Instead of using multiple images, the toning option creates an image with different exposures using a single photograph.

Two editions of Adobe Photoshop are available, the standard edition at US$699 (upgrade at US$199) and the Extended edition at US$999 (upgrade at US$349) which includes tools for creating and editing 3D and motion-based content.
