Experimental: The category to try something new Experimental: The category to try something new 08/31/2012 created by Red Bull Illume Red Bull Illume’s ‘Experimental’ category allows for photographers to conceptually and technically push the medium in new and creative ways. It is a chance for photographers to experiment with their equipment or with new techniques that can bring out some exciting results. Daniel Grund topped the Experimental category in the 2010 Image Quest with a shot of two race planes at the Red Bull Air Race. What was different about this shot was that Grund used 3D, which brings the scene to life.Daniel is still pleased with his category winning shot: “I actually just recently sold a large print of the picture to a company that produces imaging products for industrial purposes!”Yet Daniel hasn’t pursued 3D photography – the benefit of using the technique did not have such a big impact on his career apart from gaining publicity. He offers advice for other photographers looking to experiment with 3D: “Try and go for it, but be careful. It only works if it strengthens the level of originality, otherwise it’s just an effect which can ruin the picture!”“The picture was ideally suited to enhance with a 3D depiction because in this case the technology works for the picture and not vice-versa. The 3D depiction was created exclusively in post-production. To get an optimal view of the 3D enhancement of this picture you have to look at it with the red lens on your left eye and the blue lens on your right eye.”Grund is keeping an open mind about his future Red Bull Illume submissions. “I have nothing planned yet. But I will definitely check the categories and give it some thought!” For more inspiration on the other images that were shortlisted in the experimental category, check out the gallery.
