Meet your judges With only days to go before submissions close, we spoke to a few handpicked Red Bull Illume judges about what kind of work is likely to grab their attention, and how simply getting your work seen can boost your career. 03/24/2016 © Dean Barnes Red Bull Illume is pleased to announce our list of judges for the 2016 edition of the contest. The skilled selection of photo editors will soon get ready to sort through thousands of entries in search of the world’s greatest action and adventure sports images.By submitting your work to Red Bull Illume, you have the opportunity to have your images seen by some of the most influential names in the industry. It’s an incredible opportunity for everyone, as judges are likely to make a mental note of interesting projects and striking images. Of course, being selected as the Overall Winner is undoubtedly a career-changer, but the exposure that comes with simply entering – and getting eyes on your work – is something that can’t be bought. With decades of photographic experience between them, the Red Bull Illume panel of more than 50 photo editors all note the importance of presenting something thought-provoking. Founder and CPO of 500px, Evgeny Tchebotarev explains: “I think the most important thing about the photo is how it makes you feel. If you have a strong emotion due to the image, it’s great — it captures and conveys the message well. Some photos are technically perfect but soulless, and I’m looking for photos that convey soul.”Jacques Deydier of l’Equipe says when it comes to catching his eye, technological advances will be of little help. What’s he looking for? “Simplicity,” he says. “It requires more work.” A great photo, he adds, is one that “combines information, emotion and visual appeal”.Head of snowboarding content for Whitelines, Ed Blomfield agrees, adding that while technique is important, "a good eye" is the key to great photography. "In the end it is the imagination of the photographer to ‘see’ a shot before the shutter is depressed that really makes an image."Those fortunate enough to make it to the Winner Award Ceremony in Chicago on September 28 will gain even more exposure. These photographers’ work will not only be showcased to guests at the prestigious event, but to people around the world as part of a unique nighttime photo exhibition. Finalist images will also feature on countless influential online channels and be published in a high-quality photo book alongside other world-class images from big-name and aspiring professional photographers.View the full list of judges here and browse through their profiles for invaluable tips and insights. The deadline to submit your shots is just days away – Thursday, March 31, 2016 at midnight (CET).
