Broncolor is the perfect partner for Red Bull Illume team thanks to their dedication in lighting the way for photographers. The lighting specialists are constantly innovating and the exciting Move 1200 L power pack is just one example of how broncolor are changing the landscape. Red Bull Illume recently spoke to broncolor photographer, Urs Recher about the Move and what it offers.
“We have the best power pack for sports photography,” he says. Broncolor do not just focus on sports photography but he says the Move is the natural choice for anyone working in the action sports genre.
He says: “The Move offers an unbelievably short flash duration – it goes down to 1/20000 of a second at t0.5! If you would like to shoot an action sequence, the Move offers two options: you can use the very fast recycling time or you can pre-programme a sequence which results in a stroboscopic phase and you can leave shutter open and — pop-pop-pop — you have multiple exposures on the same shot!” explains Recher.
The head technician also outlines lighting problems that stem from shooting certain sports: “At a recent paragliding shoot, we needed to illuminate a big area with perfect light, and it was tricky to hit the right spot. The Move was ideal for this because with 1200 joules, it could easily reproduce ‘daylight’ flashes from about 10-12 meters away. In the photos the thin lines of rope from the actual paraglider are only 1.5/2 mm wide, but due to the very short flash duration they came out absolutely sharp in every picture.”
According to Recher, the next trend in flash development could be less to do with power packs: “Modern power packs are so developed, it is difficult to think anything they cannot do. There is still a lot of creative potential with the light chambers – different sizes and shapes of the reflectors – and potential to rebuild existing light shapes to make them easier to handle and so on. Maybe there is something coming in the near future!” he says.
The Move is a fantastic investment for sports photographers looking for a mobile power source – it weighs 6kg, is no bigger than a camera bag and offers all the specs sports photographers will be looking for:
- flash energy: 1200 J
- f-stop: 64 1/10 (with MobiLED)
- flash duration up to 1/20000 s (t 0.5), 1/8500 s (t0.1)
- charging time: 0.2 – 1.9 s
- 2 outlets with flash cut-off and ECTC technology
- 2 outlets symmetrical and individually asymmetrical
- up to 9 f-stops
