broncolor joins Red Bull Illume

Red Bull Illume is pleased to announce that broncolor has come on board as a partner for the 2013 Image Quest.

The Swiss lighting brand is the ideal fit for Red Bull Illume. It has been making high-end light equipment for decades and its battery operated Move 1200L is the perfect portable system for action sports photographers. It packs 1200 joules of power in just 6kg - and is no bigger than a camera bag. This offers photographers fast recycling with short flash duration for shooting sequences or event action in any light situation.

Founded in 1958, the Swiss company broncolor has become a global player on the international market for professional lighting systems. Innovative developments, precision, benchmark technology, quality and reliability are the drivers of this success. The patented flash cut-off technology offers to action photographers incredible short flash duration with stabilised colour temperature. This technology has been incorporated in the new flash system Move 1200L.

With broncolor supplying one of the winning prizes, there's an added incentive for any photographer looking to enter the competition. Submissions are open until April 30th.

Shooting the FWT with David Carlier

The pressure and challenges of covering an entire event series can be super tough. From his experience of shooting at every Freeride World Tour event in the season, Red Bull Illume finalist David Carlier offers some insight and tips about what is expected of event photographers:

How do you prepare?
In order to be ready for the series, I train a lot... biking, ski touring, langlauf skating, etc. I also do a lot of mountaineering, meaning I can reach shooting locations where other photographers can’t go easily or without a mountain guide. This gives me a lot of flexibility in my job and the chance to find great shooting angles.

Tell us about a typical day…
Up very early with the first riders, I climb to the start gate with them to capture those unique moments at sunrise to then position myself in the face at a strategic location.

Then it’s 4-5 hours of intense shooting until the comp is over. After that I rush to the edit room to download photos and work on the post prod in order to extract a 30 best of photos selection in 60 minutes to dispatch to media around the world.

How do you keep a fresh eye?
People are now used to those freeriding photos with huge cliff drops and flying powder. So it’s a real challenge to always find new angles and original framing. In a regular photoshoot we normally have a full day or more to come up with a series of images.

With an event like FWT, we do not have this luxury. The riders choose their lines and most of the time I don't even know where they will come from! So I need to move fast, be able to react to any situation and keep a "fresh eye" on what is happening in order to capture that one shot that will make it in the media the next day!

How do you gear up?
Mastering my gear is obviously a very important part of the job. I shoot 90% of my images with the Nikon D800. To my eyes, the censor of that camera is by far the best out there in terms of dynamic range, color accuracy and sharpness, even if the motor is slower than on other cameras (5 frame/sec.) which doesn't bother me at all!

Lighting up Atlanta

The Red Bull Illume exhibition tourstop in Atlanta is in full swing – and you only have a few more days to see the bright lights in Piedmont Park as the exhibition closes on March 30.

The opening night dazzled more than 3,000 guests who strolled through Piedmont Park and took in the sights of 25 life-sized, illuminated lightboxes featuring 50 of the best action and adventure sports photographs in the world.

To mark the opening, the Red Bull Air Force skydived into the park and the lightboxes were unveiled as they landed. Attendees were also treated to performances from Red Bull athletes and live broncolor photo demonstrations by professional photographers. Among the attending Red Bull Illume photographers were Zak Noyle, Dave Lehl, Ryan Taylor, Jimmy Wilson and Theodore Van Orman.  Scores of pro photographers, editors, athletes and members of the public also watched the unveiling.

“The best part about being at the Red Bull Illume exhibit in Atlanta for me is getting to enjoy the adventure portrayed in the photo from the outside and sharing the experience with other people,” said Rafa Ortiz, a kayaking athlete featured in a wining photo displayed in the exhibit.

Be sure to get down to Piedmont Park before March 30! More info here.

“I'm lucky to call Vancouver my home so it's fantastic to have Red Bull Illume come to the city. The display is epic,” says Sterling Lorence, attendee and Red Bull Illume finalist. ”Photography is at an incredible place these days and action sports is blossoming across the world so it's great to see Red Bull Illume showcase such progressive accomplishments in the photographic arts. It leaves me constantly inspired.”

The life-size lightboxes showcasing the elite Red Bull Illume images are on display until February 8. The exhibition will come to life after sunset each night from 5:30pm onwards. More information on the event can be found here.
