Red Bull Illume is pleased to announce that broncolor has come on board as a partner for the 2013 Image Quest.
The Swiss lighting brand is the ideal fit for Red Bull Illume. It packs 1200 joules of power in just 6kg - and is no bigger than a camera bag. This offers photographers fast recycling with short flash duration for shooting sequences or event action in any light situation.
Founded in 1958, the Swiss company broncolor has become a global player on the international market for professional lighting systems. Innovative developments, precision, benchmark technology, quality and reliability are the drivers of this success. The patented flash cut-off technology offers to action photographers incredible short flash duration with stabilised colour temperature. Action Sports Photography Workshops
In one of two separate workshops, Red Bull Illume photographer Christian Pondella gave a lecture at the University of Texas on April 18. After showcasing various examples of his work, he spoke about techniques he used and how he went about setting up the shots. Later the students had an hour to shoot stunt motorcyclist Aaron Colton.
“I always tell young shooters to shoot things they are passionate about. Don't be afraid to experiment with your camera and take chances when shooting a subject, basically be willing to fail in the process of getting a great shot,” says Pondella.
The students later edited their best photos from the shoot and discussed each photo back in the lecture hall where Pondella critiqued what he saw. One of the students, Amyn Kassam was chosen as the winner and won a media credential for the Red Bull Moto GP and the opportunity to shadow Pondella and learn how a pro operates.
Another action sport photography workshop was hosted by Romanian Red Bull photographer Mihai Stetcu on the 16th of April. Out of around 150 photographers who applied for the two day workshop, only 40 were selected to attend based on three of their own photographs they had submitted.
The first day was used for theory, and Stetcu shared his experiences and delivered technical advice in preparation for the following day. The next day was spent at a photo shoot in a skate park with Red Bull athlete Mihnea Groseanu and a few other riders. After the shooting, everyone went to the F64 studio for editing and analysis, and Stetcu showed the students examples from the 2010 Red Bull Illume exhibition to inform and inspire them.
You can enjoy a gallery below of the shots taken from the workshops. A number of the students from both workshops submitted to Red Bull Illume and will be waiting to see if they have made the cut. Christian Pondella is also looking forward to it: “I am very excited to see what photos make the final 50!”

One month to go: Getting ready
As the countdown continues to the close of Red Bull Illume submissions on April 30th, photographers are urged to get busy organizing and uploading their submissions. You can submit up to five images to each of the ten categories, a possible total of 50 images – so don’t leave all the planning to one evening.
Part of the Red Bull Illume Image Quest is about carefully choosing the most suitable category – this way for more advice about choosing the right category. Please note that once images are uploaded they cannot be moved or edited, so it is essential to ensure your selection is perfect before you begin uploading!
Please also keep in mind the competition rules: Images must be 10 Mega Pixels and above, but this file size can only be a maximum of 10 Mega Bytes. In order to determine the Mega Pixels of your image, simply multiply the vertical and horizontal number of pixels and divide by one million. e.g. 12.2 Mega Pixels (2848 pixels x 4288 pixels = 12,212,224).
The top 50 finalists will attend a grand ceremony in the city of Hong Kong where the winning images will be unveiled to the world. The top 50 images will then become part of a worldwide exhibition tour of capitals and cultural hubs across the globe. At these nighttime exhibitions, the photographs will be illuminated on life-size lightboxes. Certainly a good way for photographers to put their name up in lights!
So it’s time to flick through your archives and pick your best!
You can register here and submit your images here. Although time is running out, there are even still a few weekends left to head out and capture that shot you’ve been thinking about.
We look forward to receiving your images!
