While heli-skiing deep in the Chilean Andes Mountains, we came across this incredible 600 meter ramp that was asking to be skied. With a bit of teamwork, we did exactly that.
The landing wasn’t big enough for the helicopter to completely set down, so the pilot expertly balanced the helicopter on the ridge, just close enough for the two riders to jump out. The guide assessed the snow by setting in two big hard turns across the top to intentionally create an avalanche if there was any instability in the snowpack. No slab was initiated, so the guide tucked into the rocks on the skiers’ left, and called back to the second skier to put a track right down the center.
I shot this image out the window of the helicopter, hovering out in front of the face. It’s the moments like this, when all the elements come together with the right team that keeps us reaching for the next.
