I had a photoshoot with a similar idea with biker Tomas Slavik before and I tried to do something in the same style. I wanted to fix an athlete in the air and shoot him in a different perspective than usual. Kayak and water was the best choice so I called my friend Vavrinec Hradilek and he agreed.
Planning was an important part of the photoshoot. For the location I selected the factory of my strobe sponsor Fomei because they had all equipment and they also helped me to create a huge black background. I fixed Vavrinec on the traverse with strong rope. There were also assistants throwing water on him to create a big splash.
For Vavrinec it was really difficult because it wasn’t an easy position for him and he had to hold the kayak just with his legs.
The whole photoshoot took more than six hours and I was really happy with the result. I shot with a Nikon D800E and Nikkor 70-200/2.8. I had eight Fomei strobes with short flash duration to freeze water. They have an integrated battery and were covered in plastic bags to protect them from the water.
