Kilsby's Sinkhole is a massive freshwater cave in South Australia. Located in a cow paddock in rural farmland, divers descend rough limestone stairs to enter a hidden world. The cave is popular with divers and on warm weekends there can be up to a dozen divers in the water. The high sides of the surrounding cave means that sunlight only hits the water in the summer.
I arrived with my parents to find the place deserted. I love diving this sinkhole for the fantastic visibility and the way divers look like they are floating in air. That same water clarity makes it difficult to create photos of the whole stunning vista when other divers are around. The crystal clear water shows the bubble trail above each diver, making its way to the surface.
A combination of perfect solitude and perfect sunshine made for the perfect shot. As my parents floated in space, outlined in a sunbeam and weightless in the water, I maneuvered into position to frame the cave walls around them. I love this shot for capturing the splendor of the underground world in the transition between light and dark.
