I had this kind of shot in mind for many years now. My friend Peter Kaiser and me were searching for shoot locations reachable from our home bases around the Alps. We found this interesting building not too far away where last year's Audi Nines took place. The Saar Polygon stands on the spoil tip of the Bergwerk Saar coal mine. This monument represents the history of the coal mining industry, along with its associated traditions as a part of the region’s heritage.
After we got there I got the chance to shoot some creative angles during sunset and night.
Allied with the good weather forecast, the conditions were perfect. Peter Kaiser was riding super well. He threw a few more tail whips during the sunset. Meanwhile I found this angle very far away. I thought about producing something different, so I turned off my flashes during the sunset and tried to catch Peter against the backlight of the backlight during the setting sun. Afterwards, I adjusted the contrast during post-production in the same way I visualized the image on the mountain before.
I was super happy to produce this high-contrast black and white photo combined with Peter's style - it was a nice atmosphere right next to this monument!
