Several days before this shot was taken I had visited the location for a different photoshoot. Just as we were finishing I noticed the setting sun was coming through to the street we were on and it just looked magnificent. I knew right then and there that I needed to come back with someone to get some great action shots in the setting sun.
A few days later, me and my good friend, Japanese flatland BMX rider Tsutomu Kitayama, arrived just before we knew the sun would set. To our luck there were no clouds on the horizon so I knew we would be getting amazing light on the chosen location. Saying that, the area the sun could cut through was quite tight, giving us only a few minuets of optimal light.
At first I was running around with my strobes but after a few test shots I felt the look of the natural light was much more pleasing and in line to my original vision a few days past.
So in a race against time I let Tsutomu know where I wanted him to ride, lied down on the ground, and started shooting. Looking back I’m not entirely sure how this shot is even in focus as I couldn’t see anything looking through my camera’s view finder, but we got lucky, and got a great shot in the end!
