Surreal images have always fascinated me in a very strong way. The first look on an image is always really important and my goal was to create something where the viewer sees something cool but realizes that something is wrong or strange.
In this case I asked Anne Eaton if she would be up for a little bit of a different skateboard photo in a pool doing a handplant underneath the water.
The idea was to use the surface as a reflective medium of the surreal. The brain knows it's just the border between water and air, but with turning the picture 180° and performing the handplant right on that line, it triggers your brain to think, that this line is rock solid.
I used a water housing for my camera with a wide angle lens that I just pressed slightly underneath the surface to just cover the lens entirely with water, to get the most reflections.
Outside the water I had a studio flash to get a spotlight on Anne so I could darken the pool around her.
We both were super excited about what we got from that shoot when we flipped the camera to see the result on the display, because it was just a weird idea that looked pretty funny during the shooting and we both had no idea if it would work out. I'm super happy that it actually worked and that even the handplant of Anne looks very real.
The wait is over and we can finally share the first new images of this year's Red Bull Illume Image Quest! Every week, we announce the semi-finalists of a different category, so stay tuned for more mind-blowing images.
