I had started planning this shot the previous summer, while hiking on Mount Hoods north side. Going through the remains of the Gnarl Ridge fire, the dead tree trunks and their long narrow shadows made a strange abstract scene. Immediately I knew I wanted to return with snow on the ground to create this image.
Kyle and I started hiking well before the sun was up. Our location was several miles up the mountain, and getting there and setting up before the sun was too high was crucial in capturing the long shadows.
After scrambling around getting a few different shots, we were exhausted and slowly cruising down the mountain. I decided to hang back a little ways, fire off a couple more in this grove of dead trees, and managed to get the photo that would turn into this final image.
The wait is over and we can finally share the first new images of this year's Red Bull Illume Image Quest! Every week, we announce the semi-finalists of a different category, so stay tuned for more mind-blowing images.
