Since winning Red Bull Illume in 2019 with his incredible underwater shot of surfer Adrian Buchan, Ben Thouard has shifted his gaze away from the sport to the raw beauty of the ocean. He tells us why surf photography is so hard and what advice he has for younger photographers.

Can you describe your creative process? Do you already have an image in mind? Or are you more spontaneous?

When you shoot in the ocean, you always need to remain open to what's coming at you because it's always going to be different. There's never the same moment again. That being said I always try to remain ready for anything. But it's true that many times I was swimming in the waves, maybe even surfing, and then I see something and I was like, oh, that’s amazing – that moment because of the light or the shape of the wave or whatever. And then I try to shoot it. Most of the time you would miss it because you’re not ready! So I do jump in the water with my equipment, with a photo in mind that I want to capture. It could take weeks, months, even years. So that's why you really need to remain open and ready for anything.

What are you trying to show with photography?

I want to show the beauty of the ocean and transmit the emotion that I feel when I'm in the water. I'm in awe all the time when I’m on the ocean, and I just want to share that beauty and that feeling of being mesmerized by the ocean.

What is the magic behind surf photography?

Probably because I've been a surfer since a young age, swimming in the waves is just so amazing to me. Being part of the action, part of the elements is what excites me. There’s a lot of anticipation for that kind of photography especially when shooting with a wide angle like a fisheye in the barrel. When you see the set coming and all the surfers battling, then you try to be in the right spot. Once you get the photo and it’s what you were expecting, then it's an amazing feeling. Why surf photography is exciting – and why it’s so hard – is because it's so demanding physically. There are so many factors to be aware of, plus the technical aspect of it like that drop of water on the lens. But it's one of the greatest challenges I've experienced.

It was a big reward to win.

Is there a lesson that photography has taught you?

I think patience is the biggest key for a photographer. I'm really not a patient person. Photography has definitely taught me patience.

Has the ocean taught you anything?

The ocean has taught me respect because you’re little in the ocean. The ocean is always so powerful.

You must have been pummelled a few times?

You gotta pay to play!

Chris Burkard said surf photography is one of the most challenging genres because every moment is different. Do you agree?

Yeah, absolutely. When you're working on the ocean, it brings another factor that is really hard to predict. You can't really set up your photo even if you want something specific. There are always going to be different factors at play.

Are there any images that you’re still trying to get?

Totally. That's why it's still exciting. When you shoot a lot of the same topic and same subject, at some point you feel like you've done it all, but it’s more the way you look at it and the style that you're creating – the way you shoot it, the techniques, the lens, and the angle. I'm still in love with what I do out there and I still feel inspired.

What is the best advice that you would give to someone wanting to shoot surf or ocean photography?

Listen to your gut, to your emotion. That's the most important because everybody can be a photographer these days with all the tools that we have, and the platforms to show your work. There's so many people shooting photos and I feel like the most important is first to listen to who you are and what drives you, what excites you and inspires you. That’s the basics of photography.

Listen to what makes you feel special and then stick to it

Are you wearing fins when you work?

Yes, the short fins that are soft enough to spend hours in the water. I also wear goggles most of the time if I'm shooting underwater. Then my camera is inside an AQUATECH housing but no flotation, no weights, just a pair of fins and the camera.

Looking ahead, is there a wider message you hope your photography conveys?

At first I was just shooting the action. But in these last couple years I've really dedicated my work to the beauty of the ocean. I’m driven by the surf and I'm still living at Teahupo’o, French Polynesia and this is where I produce most of my work, so it's all about the waves and the surf, just more to the beauty side of it and not necessarily to the sports side. I just want to show how beautiful the environment is. I guess if we all fell in love with the ocean it's going to help us protect it.
