What is Red Bull Illume about?
Red Bull Illume is the world’s greatest adventure and action sports imagery contest. Its aim is to showcase the most creative and captivating images from the adventure and action sports world, and to celebrate the photographers working behind the lens.
When and why was Red Bull Illume founded?
Red Bull Illume was founded in 2006 by Ulrich Grill. At its core, it highlights the often-unsung heroes behind the camera, who create unforgettable, eye-catching imagery. The contest is unique in its focus on adventure and action sports imagery, celebrating both creativity and the stories behind the images. Open to all amateur and professional photographers, it offers global exposure, innovative exhibitions and a platform to showcase the passion and skill of photographers pushing boundaries in extreme environments.
How many editions have there been and who won them?
There have been seven editions of Red Bull Illume. Across these editions, there have been six overall winners: Fred Mortagne (2007), Chris Burkard (2010), Lorenz Holder (2013 & 2016), Ben Thouard (2019), Will Saunders (2021) and Krystle Wright (2023).

How many photographers participated in all editions?
Across all editions of Red Bull Illume, thousands of photographers from more than 100 countries took part.
How does the judging process of Red Bull Illume work?
The judging process involves several rounds and judges base their decisions on technical, creative and artistic excellence without getting any information about the photographer nor the photo itself. First, an internal panel selects 250 semi-finalists from all categories. Then, an international panel of 50 photo and industry experts narrows these down to 50 finalists and 10 category winners. Finally, the judging panel selects an overall winner from the 10 category winners. Since 2019, the community also has the opportunity to vote for their favorite Instagram submission.
How are the winners revealed?
The winners are revealed at the Winner Award Ceremony which so far has taken place in Aspen, United States, Dublin, Ireland, Hong Kong, Chicago, United States, atop Kronplatz in Italy and Sölden in Austria. The once-in-a-lifetime event brings photographers, athletes, brands and international media representatives all together in one place. It includes workshops, partner activations, networking opportunities, the Winner Award Ceremony itself and the Red Bull Illume Exhibition.
What happens after the winners of Red Bull Illume are announced?
After the winners are announced, the 50 finalist images travel the world as part of the breathtaking exhibition, showcased on unique indoor and outdoor 2x2m lightboxes. Additionally, the top 250 images of each edition are featured in a limited-edition photobook, complete with biographies and stories about the images, written by the finalists themselves.
