To me, sports and action photography is about capturing emotions and connecting with athletes in a split second moment. The story behind the athlete, the work they’ve put in, and the emotion they have put into what they are accomplishing—the joy, sadness, the drive—all of this builds towards an incredible photo that makes you stop in your tracks.
Understanding the sport you’re photographing is definitely going to give you an advantage for getting that incredible shot. The ability to anticipate moves and actions will allow you to get into position and snap that emotion as it shines through. Understanding your perspective and the viewer’s perspective is also important. When you review some of the most spectacular sports and action photos, the ones that stand out are the ones that have perspectives you might not normally see as a spectator.
