At Red Bull Illume there’s nothing we like more than perusing a glossy photography coffee table book while drinking a cappuccino, and we’ve picked out a few that action and adventures sports photography fans should take a look at.
Warming up chilly winter evenings is Tim McKenna’s 2007 book, Teahupo’o, named after Tahiti’s legendary surf wave. McKenna won the Experimental category of the 2007 Image Quest with an underwater shot taken at Teahupo’o of a surfer’s hand dragging through the wave.
The photo is just one of many in McKenna’s book which expertly captures the gorgeous deep blue colours and fearsome power of one of the world’s most dangerous surf spots.
Stories, exploits and dramas told by big-name surfers who conquered Taehupo’o over the years, such as Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and Jason Polakow, accompany the images. The book is available on McKenna’s website, www.timmckennaphoto.com, and Amazon.
Scheduled for release during December 2009 is American Michael Clark’s Digital Masters: Adventure Photography guide. Clark, an internationally renowned sports, travel and landscape photographer, says on his website that the book is part of a series of how to publications, “detailing the ins and outs of creating top notch adventure sports images.”
Well respected in the field, Clark’s book collects many years worth of technical advice, tips on specific skills and equipment as well as advice on “what it takes to be a pro.” It should be available soon via Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites.
There aren’t many coffee table books with BMXing as the focus. In 2004, German photographer Kay Clauberg published Paradigm Shift, a visually pleasing offering containing 132 pages of his best BMX images and text from featured riders.
After years of work and difficulty in finding a publisher, it received praise from all corners of the sport and five years on, is yet to be topped. Also on Amazon.
If winter sports are your thing, take a peak at Addicted to Snow. Subtitled Snowboard Photography From Around the Globe, the book is edited by long-time snowboarder Helge Zirkl and covers everything from big mountain to jibbing.
First published in 2006 and fans can now get hold of an Addicted to Snow 2010 wall calendar as well as the book via, you guessed it, Amazon.
