New Creativity is a category where thinking outside the box is an absolute necessity, and pushing the limits to find a new angle or lighting setup is a must. Eric Berger’s shot of a ski jump from within an ice-cave is the perfect example of how getting creative in the hunt for a different perspective can produce an extraordinary photograph.
Eric Berger tells of how his category winner required patience, experience and caution. “We didn't just show up and jump into crevasses and start shooting. We built up to this image. As I got closer and closer to the opening of this ice cave, I thought it might be interesting to get a perspective from inside looking out.”
For Eric, creativity is about the individual, “I think creativity is something that comes naturally and is different for everybody. If you take your time and look at things with an open mind, it becomes easier to be creative.”
Eric also offers some advice for young photographers looking to get creative,
“Don't settle for the first angle you see. Take a step back and analyze the scene. Then try to come up with angles that best capture the situation.”
Although he hasn’t planned a submission yet, Eric says he will be entering the 2013 Red Bull Illume when submissions open in December. If you’re like Eric and are looking to get creative, take a browse through the gallery for some inspiration!
