The Red Bull Illume exhibition opened in Vancouver on Friday 31st January and was a fantastic success. Hundreds of leading photographers, editors, athletes and members of the public watched as the unique 2 x 2m (6 x 6ft) lightboxes were unveiled on Jack Poole Plaza.
Canada’s most talented photographers received accolades at the international photography contest, including Vancouver’s own Scott Serfas who won first place in the Illumination category. Other local finalists included Jussi Grznar, Sterling Lorence and Dan Carr.
“I'm lucky to call Vancouver my home so it's fantastic to have Red Bull Illume come to the city. The display is epic,” says Sterling Lorence, attendee and Red Bull Illume finalist. ”Photography is at an incredible place these days and action sports is blossoming across the world so it's great to see Red Bull Illume showcase such progressive accomplishments in the photographic arts. It leaves me constantly inspired.”
The life-size lightboxes showcasing the elite Red Bull Illume images are on display until February 8. The exhibition will come to life after sunset each night from 5:30pm onwards. More information on the event can be found here.
The Vancouver tour stop is the third one after Hong Kong and Scottsdale, USA. The exhibition will continue traveling around the world's capitals and cultural hubs for the next two years as a unique night-time exhibition.
The 2013 Red Bull Illume photobook, a beautiful hardcover featuring a glossy collection of the Top 250 images from the contest, as well as behind-the-scenes stories on how the photographers went the extra mile to get their shots, is available for purchase on-site. For those who can’t make the exhibition there is also a free Tablet App available for download.
