The Close Up category is a chance for photographers to zoom in and bring the details to life. Nathan Smith’s intimate shot of a surfer Andrew Mooney within a tunnel of water captures a perfect moment, and the close proximity brings out the intensity of the athlete’s concentration. In action sports photography, getting a close-up of an athlete can be very challenging indeed.
Nathan reveals the secret behind this shot was teamwork: ‘To get a half-decent shot on any given day is half the battle, getting a great surfer like Andrew who will work with you and help make it happen is the next step. It’s all about teamwork for these sorts of shots.’
Nathan made the most of the conditions to get the shot he was looking for. ‘I had an idea of what I could get with the sun setting where it was. Things don’t always go to plan when shooting in water so getting something nice is always pleasing!’
Sadly Nathan so far hasn't planned to submit any images to the 2013 Red Bull Illume. ‘I’ve missed a few things this year due to other commitments and I really don’t think I have anything that would be considered a category winner. I’m a firm believer that a photographer should only show his or her best work. At this point I’ll be holding off, unless something happens in the meantime. I’ll know it when and if that happens. Either way I’ll be looking forward to looking at all the images submitted. I’m sure there will be some outstanding moments!’
Nathan offers some advice to young photographers: ‘Love what you do and let things happen. Don’t try to emulate other people’s work, but do find inspiration. Most of all work hard and don’t give up!’
